Careers at MTG

Maurice Turnor Gardner is a boutique private client law firm of top-tier lawyers based in London, and is renowned in the private wealth arena for the breadth and depth of its technical excellence. Our leading position is recognised by our peers (The Times Best Law Firms 2023, British Legal Awards Contentious Trust Team of the Year 2021 and Private Client Team of the Year 2021 (for the second year running)) and by the industry – we are top ranked in both the Legal 500 and Chambers HNW guide, with many partners and associates recognised individually.

Our specialist focus is providing UK advice and innovative solutions for ultra high net worth clients, usually involving complex cross-border estate planning as an adjunct to UK lifetime and succession advice. We have experience of all the issues which affect wealthy individuals (and their families and trustees) and professional practices in the UK and elsewhere. We seek to understand all the legal, commercial and tax issues affecting our clients and to provide them with principled and practical legal solutions, working in partnership with them as their trusted advisers.

Training Contracts

The application process for Training Contracts for 2025/26 is now open. Further details about how to apply can be found below.

Training Contracts

We look to recruit individuals with a proven academic record and a commitment to excellence. Applicants are likely to be highly motivated individuals who set themselves high standards.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital, together with strong organisational skills and the ability to handle a busy and time pressured workload.

We operate a rotational “seat” system and each trainee will have a mid-seat and end of seat review in addition to monthly informal “catch up” meetings with their mentor.

Throughout their two year training contract, all trainees undertake additional internal and external training to complement their GDL/LPC/SQE legal education.

Attributes such as integrity, flexibility, drive and resourcefulness are prerequisite and applicants are expected to show dedication, enterprise, self-confidence and ambition as well.

Application Process

The application process for Training Contracts for 2025/26 is now open and can be accessed through this link. It will close on 31 May 2023.

We will be conducting interviews in June 2023 with a view to holding an Assessment Centre for successful candidates in late June/early July 2023

With the introduction of the Solicitor’s Qualifying Exam (SQE) in September 2021, there are now a number of routes to qualification. MTG’s implementation of the SQE can accommodate candidates who will qualify both under the traditional route (LPC) and those who pursue the SQE.

We will continue to operate a rotational “seat” system whereby you will spend six months with different fee earners to enable you to experience the different areas of practice within the firm (private client (including charities and immigration), real estate and dispute resolution). You will work closely with a senior lawyer, so that you will be involved in your supervisor’s work and learn how matters are handled on a day to day basis.

All candidates will follow this rotational seat system for a full 24 months, even if they are eligible to apply for admission as solicitors during this period by virtue of previously accumulated qualifying work experience (QWE) and having passed both of the SQE1 & SQE2 assessments.

Choice of Law School

If you have studied a non-law degree, and you have not already commenced a GDL or LPC, or an SQE preparation course, we will require you to complete the PGDL at BPP (at their London branch or any of their UK regional centres). Thereafter you will attend BPP’s SQE1 preparation course and if successful, BPP’s preparation course for the SQE2 including their intensive classroom revision course.

Law graduates and non-law graduates who have already commenced/completed the GDL are required to study the LPC at either the University of Law or BPP and we will discuss with students their choice of electives before they commence the course.

You must obtain or have obtained a pass (or better) for both the GDL (if required) and LPC, both of which you will have completed prior to the September/March in the year in which your training contract/QWE will start. Those following the SQE route must pass both stages of BPP’s award-bearing SQE preparation courses (or the equivalent at the University of Law).

We will meet the cost of all law school fees (assuming no local authority grant can be obtained, including the cost of taking the SQE assessments) for those who accept a training contract/QWE with us for any law school year they have not already completed before accepting the offer. In addition, we will provide you with a maintenance grant of £7,500 per year for a maximum of two law school years.  We do not sponsor students retrospectively.
